It is never too early to start to plan for the annual CamerasWithoutMirrors and Nikonites joint meet and greet at the amazing Circle B Bar Reserve near Lakeland, Florida, USA. For those not familiar with the area, it is about 60 miles southwest of the Orlando airport.

If you have never experienced this type of environment before, you owe it to yourself to attend. Laurie and I attended this year and were blown away - see this thread for more. The Nikonites thread of 2017 results is here.

We are planning to attend in 2018. Many folks travel specifically for the event. This year, about half were Canadian! Hope to meet you there!!

    February 20-21, 2018!

I'll buy you a beer when you get here to help offset the cost. Will that work?

Oh damn... I would love to go to one of those... We're headed near there in a few weeks time. Staying in Port Richey for a more relaxed/no theme parks type break. We were looking for nice places to go and that looks like it will fit the bill.

Honest if you are in the area and have the time, don't miss it!! If you have longer glass, bring it too. A lot of the area is uncovered so bring sunscreen, water and a hat!

I have just the "kit" 14-42 and now the 40-150 (kit level) but that's 300mm equivalent, so I'm hoping that would be enough.
We normally stay central and have never been there, but then last year was the first time without the children/minimal theme parks and we ended up touring a little north of the theme park area (Mount Dora I think) and that was lovely natural area too. We tend to visit Florida once a year so if we don't manage it this time, we will certainly put it into our plans for next time.

LOL Mike. One year when the kids were small we decided to take a trip from Kissimmee to the Space Center, its a quite a drive through wooded areas much like the photo. We got a flat on the rental car and we had no idea where the spare was so we had to get everyone out of the car and look for it... all the time we were there I was panicking (the twins were 6 years old and my daughter was only 2) we had to stand away from the road so we didn't get run down and we had to stand far enough away from gator ditches so they didn't get a snack. Can you imagine trying to keep my eyes on 3 very excitable kids roadside... not much fun!

Laurie and I won't be attending this year. We stumbled over an unbelievable airfare / frequent flyer point combo to one of our favorite places. We couldn't pass.

I think @Marcel might represent CWOM? If you do go @Marcel, what do you think you'll shoot? I rented a XF 100-400mm last year and had a blast!

Just home from this years trip to Florida... we finally made it to this place, its amazing. Its definitely somewhere we will visit again when the weather is better (caught in one of the storms)
Can someone tell me, is alligator alley closed regularly?
Once I have got over my disappointment of being back home, I will take a look at the photos I took there :)

I couldn't make the trip at the last minute this past February and heard it was closed then, too. :(

Yes its been closed since January according to the notice I saw, but there was no information as to whether it will be permanently closed or whether it was for a period of time.
Hopefully if there is a meeting for next year we'd come IF we can find a place to stay over winter for a couple of weeks.
We are hoping for a Feb/March time visit to escape our dreary winters.
